A Professor of Social Ethics at Adekunle Ajasin University, Sunday Awoniyi, is set to deliver the institution’s 64th inaugural lecture focusing on the impact of corruption and leadership failure on society.
The lecture, titled “The Wages of Corruption and Leadership Failure: Socio-Ethical Frameworks as Pathways to Social Transformation,” is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the university’s Multipurpose Hall in Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.
According to a statement released by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of Ceremonies, Prof. Adebisi Daramola, the event will commence at 2pm, while guests are expected to be seated by 1:30pm.
The statement added that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Olugbenga Ige, would preside over the lecture.
Awoniyi is expected to examine the consequences of corruption and ineffective leadership on national development while proposing socio-ethical approaches as solutions to societal challenges.
The don began his academic journey at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies in 1990.
He later earned a Master of Arts degree in the same discipline from University of Ibadan in 1995, before obtaining a Master of Philosophy in 2007 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2012 from the institution.
Awoniyi joined AAUA in 2001 as Lecturer II in the Department of Religion and African Culture and rose through the ranks before attaining professorship in 2019.
Over the years, he has held several administrative positions within the university, including Acting Head of the Department of Religion and African Culture, Coordinator of the Postgraduate Programme, Sandwich Degree Programme, Pre-degree Programme and Seminar Series.
He also served as Chairman of the Faculty of Arts Postgraduate School Board and chaired the Local Organising Committee for the 42nd Annual Conference of the National Association for the Study of Religions hosted by the university.
A seasoned academic, Awoniyi has authored two books, contributed chapters to seven scholarly publications and published 34 journal articles.
He has also presented papers at conferences in Nigeria and other African countries, including Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Botswana and South Africa.
Outside AAUA, the professor worked as a part-time lecturer for the University of Uyo degree programme at Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun, and has served as an external examiner at the University of Ibadan and Ajayi Crowther University.
Awoniyi is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Association for the Study of Religions, the Association of Science and Religion in the Service of Humanity, the Local Societies Initiative and the National Association for the Promotion of Studies in Arts and Social Science.
He also belongs to international organisations such as the African Association for the Study of Religion and the European Centre for Research Training and Development in the United Kingdom.
