Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has advised ex-President Goodluck Jonathan not to join the 2027 presidential race, warning that such a move could affect the statesmanlike image he currently enjoys.
Lamido, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, gave the advice amid increasing calls from political groups and supporters urging Jonathan to return to active politics ahead of the next general elections.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday, the former governor said Jonathan had risen above partisan political struggles and should not be drawn into what he described as the country’s “troubled political environment.”
According to him, the former president has earned national and international respect since leaving office and should protect that legacy rather than return to competitive politics.
He noted that many of those calling on Jonathan to contest were acting out of frustration over the nation’s current political and economic realities.
Lamido argued that the pressure on Jonathan to re-enter the political arena lacked ideological direction and was largely driven by desperation among politicians seeking an alternative ahead of 2027.
He further stated that the former president should resist attempts by political actors to use his popularity and credibility for personal interests.
The ex-governor also criticised the condition of political parties in the country, saying many had abandoned principle-based politics for power struggles and personal ambition.
Lamido maintained that Jonathan still has an important role to play in Nigeria, but insisted such a role should remain that of a respected national figure rather than a partisan contender in future elections.
