Contractor killed in power plant mishap as firm halts operations, probes incident

A contractor has died following an industrial accident during underwater maintenance at the Egbin Power Plc facility in Lagos State.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, prompted a partial shutdown of operations at the plant and its temporary disconnection from the national grid.

The company confirmed the development in a statement issued, expressing grief over the loss and announcing the commencement of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Sources familiar with the incident said the deceased, engaged as a diver, was working within the lagoon-based pump house when a pump reportedly activated unexpectedly.

He was said to have been trapped in the impeller, sustaining fatal injuries.

Following the incident, operations in the affected section were immediately suspended as emergency safety procedures were activated, a move that contributed to the shutdown of the facility.

Checks indicated that the power station recorded zero megawatt generation on Wednesday and Thursday after the accident.

In its statement, the management of Egbin Power Plc described the development as tragic and extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.

“Emergency response and safety protocols were immediately activated, and relevant authorities duly notified. We are working closely with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ascertain the cause of the incident,” the company said.

It added that a comprehensive review was ongoing to prevent a recurrence, reiterating its commitment to maintaining high safety standards across its operations.

The outage has reportedly affected electricity supply in parts of the network connected to the plant, with consumers in some areas experiencing disruptions.
