Armed bandits have killed three personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in a deadly ambush along the Tsamiya–Illo Road in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident, which occurred while the officers were on official duty, has thrown the area into tension and renewed concerns over rising insecurity on highways in the state.
Security sources, as reported by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, said the officers were attacked by gunmen suspected to be operating on motorcycles.
It was gathered that the assailants laid an ambush along the route and opened fire on the FRSC operatives as they approached. In an attempt to escape the attack, the officers reportedly tried to flee, but were chased down and shot at close range.
All three personnel were confirmed dead at the scene.
The victims were identified as Deputy Chief Road Marshal Assistant Umar Aliyu, Senior Road Marshal Assistant Ezra Manu Gona, and Road Marshal Assistant I Mansur Ibrahim Nasir.
Following the attack, security sources said tension has heightened in the area, with authorities advising personnel operating within the axis to be more vigilant pending further security assessments.
As of the time of filing this report, the motive behind the attack remained unclear, while security agencies had commenced efforts to track the perpetrators and unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, security operatives have intensified surveillance and patrols in the area in a bid to forestall further attacks and reassure residents and road users.
