A man, Waidi, has approached a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of his marriage over what he described as his wife's persistent disrespect, stubbornness and frequent quarrels.
The petitioner told the court that his wife, Khalifa, had made their marriage unbearable through her conduct, alleging that she constantly challenged his authority and refused to heed his instructions.
Waidi further accused his wife of being argumentative and unwilling to acknowledge her mistakes, claiming she rarely apologised even when found at fault.
According to him, the strained relationship had also affected his family ties, as Khalifa allegedly treated his relatives with disdain and frequently exchanged insults with them.
The petitioner urged the court to end the marriage, stating that he no longer found peace or happiness in the union.
Testifying before the court, Waidi said the marriage was contracted under Islamic rites after he paid the required bride price.
He alleged that his wife had consistently insisted on having things done her own way since moving into his home, adding that repeated disagreements had left him frustrated.
The petitioner told the court that his wife often disregarded his opinions and was unwilling to accept responsibility for her actions.
He also claimed that her relationship with members of his family had been marked by hostility and verbal attacks.
"I am no longer interested in continuing with this marriage because it has become difficult to live with her attitude," he said.
Khalifa, however, did not oppose the request for the dissolution of the marriage.
Following the proceedings, the President of the court, Mrs O. E. Owoseni, adjourned the matter until June 20 for the defence to present its case.
