The Delta State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a student accused of fatally stabbing his younger brother during a violent altercation at their residence in the state.
The incident reportedly occurred on June 17 and involved two brothers, identified as Fejiro, 21, and Joseph, 19, who were students of the same tertiary institution and lived together in accommodation provided by their parents.
Confirming the development on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, described the tragedy as a disturbing reminder of the importance of proper parental guidance and moral upbringing.
According to Edafe, what began as a disagreement between the siblings later degenerated into a physical confrontation. Neighbours initially intervened and separated them, but the dispute reportedly resumed shortly afterwards.
The police spokesman said the brothers moved to another part of the premises where the fight escalated, resulting in the younger sibling sustaining multiple stab wounds.
He alleged that the elder brother used a kitchen knife during the attack before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim critically injured. Joseph was later confirmed dead from the injuries.
Edafe disclosed that the suspect remains on the run, adding that efforts were ongoing to track him down and bring him to justice.
The command also hinted that investigators would examine possible links to drug abuse or cult-related activities, though no conclusion had been reached.
The police assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted once the suspect is arrested.
The police further urged parents and guardians to instill sound values in their children, stressing that respect, self-control and family bonds remain crucial in preventing avoidable tragedies.
