The widow of an Accord Party member allegedly murdered by gunmen in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, has recounted how her husband was shot dead in her presence by suspected political thugs.
The victim, Aderogba Ajayi, was reportedly attacked and killed on Tuesday night, an incident that has heightened concerns over political violence in the community.
Speaking when Governor Ademola Adeleke paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family on Wednesday, the deceased's wife, Tolulope, narrated the events leading to the fatal attack and appealed for justice.
According to her, the tragedy began when a man identified as Oladapo arrived on a motorcycle and asked her husband to accompany him to see another individual, Omoaje.
She said Ajayi declined the request, maintaining that the person could reach him directly if there was any need for a meeting.
She alleged that Oladapo persisted in persuading her husband and also questioned whether he intended to attend a meeting with politician Wole Oke the next day.
Despite repeated appeals from her and one of their daughters urging him to leave the area, Ajayi remained behind.
The widow said the situation took a deadly turn when a vehicle carrying several men arrived at the scene. She claimed two of the occupants approached her husband, after which gunshots rang out.
She alleged that one of the attackers initially fired twice without hitting the victim before another barrage of shots struck him, causing him to collapse. Efforts to save him proved unsuccessful as he was later confirmed dead at a hospital.
Responding, Adeleke assured the family that the state government would fund the education of the deceased's four children.
He also directed the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to carry out a thorough investigation into the killing and ensure that anyone linked to the crime is brought to justice.
The governor further urged political stakeholders across the state to reject violence and embrace peaceful conduct ahead of future elections.
