A Grade I Area Court in Lugbe, Abuja, has dissolved a 13-year-old marriage between a housewife, Gaminana Aminat, and her husband, Musa Abdulrahab, following allegations of persistent assault and disrespect towards her family.
The court, presided over by Judge Aliyu Kagarko, granted the divorce in accordance with Islamic law after Aminat petitioned for the dissolution of the marriage, citing domestic violence, neglect and repeated insults directed at her and her parents.
Kagarko also directed the petitioner to observe the mandatory three-month Iddah period before entering into another marriage.
Testifying before the court, Aminat said she married Abdulrahab in 2012 under Islamic rites and that the union produced three children.
She alleged that her husband had for years subjected her to physical abuse and regularly disrespected both her and her family members.
According to her, efforts by relatives from both families to mediate and restore peace in the marriage failed, as the respondent allegedly ignored repeated advice.
The woman further told the court that her husband often assaulted her during disagreements and verbally abused her parents whenever they intervened in marital disputes.
“I can no longer continue in the marriage because of the constant beatings, neglect and lack of respect shown to me and my family,” she said.
Aminat added that the situation had become unbearable and urged the court to terminate the marriage.
She maintained that she had lost interest in the relationship due to what she described as her husband's failure to care adequately for her and their children, as well as his alleged pattern of abusive behaviour.
The respondent, Abdulrahab, did not oppose the application and consented to the dissolution of the marriage.
After considering submissions from both parties, the court formally ended the union and directed the petitioner to observe the required waiting period prescribed under Islamic law.
