The son of a popular refrigeration and air-conditioning technician, Idris Abiodun, has narrated how his father was allegedly killed by suspected armed robbers while trying to protect his family during a midnight attack on their residence in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The victim's son, AbdulFatai, said his 47-year-old father confronted the hoodlums after they invaded their home in the Shagari area in the early hours of the weekend.
According to him, the gang had already raided two neighbouring houses before storming their residence at about 1 a.m.
AbdulFatai said his father courageously confronted one of the attackers in an attempt to shield his family, unaware that several other armed members of the gang were lying in wait.
He explained that the assailants allegedly attacked his father with axes and cutlasses before one of them pulled out a gun and shot him at close range.
"My father wanted to defend us. He didn't know there were about three or four of them, and they were heavily armed. They attacked him with axes and cutlasses before one of them shot him. They fled immediately after he fell," he said.
The son added that the family rushed the injured technician to the hospital, but doctors later confirmed him dead after he lost a significant amount of blood.
The killing of the father of five has thrown the community into mourning, with family members, friends and residents demanding that those responsible be arrested and prosecuted.
A close associate of the deceased, identified simply as Hakeem, described Abiodun as a generous and hardworking man who dedicated his life to repairing refrigerators and air conditioners while supporting people around him.
His widow, Taibat, also appealed to the Ondo State Government and security agencies to ensure justice is served, describing her late husband as a peaceful, responsible and devoted family man.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying one suspect had been arrested in connection with the robbery and killing.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, said the suspect was assisting investigators, while efforts had been intensified to apprehend other members of the gang, assuring the public that everyone linked to the crime would be brought to justice.
