An Anambra-based hairstylist, Loveth Sunday, has revealed how her fiancé ended their relationship after she lost a leg in a road accident that occurred barely three weeks after their traditional introduction ceremony.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, the 27-year-old said the tragic incident changed the course of her life, leaving her to battle physical, emotional and financial challenges.
Sunday, who hails from Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, said she was struck by a commercial bus that reportedly suffered brake failure while she stood by the roadside on April 12, 2019.
She recalled that the accident, which happened near the Oraifite Police Station, claimed the lives of two other victims, while she sustained severe injuries that eventually led to the amputation of her left leg.
The hairstylist said good Samaritans rushed her to several hospitals, alleging that five medical facilities turned her away before she was eventually admitted to a sixth hospital.
According to her, she remained unconscious for five days and only realised the extent of her injuries after regaining consciousness.
She said doctors later referred her to an orthopaedic hospital in Ojoto, where specialists informed her that the damaged leg could no longer be saved.
Sunday disclosed that although her parents initially resisted the recommendation to amputate the leg, doctors warned that delaying the procedure could threaten her life if the infection spread.
Faced with the difficult decision, she eventually consented to the surgery, saying it became the only option to preserve her life.
She said the family spent about N2.5m on medical treatment after making an initial deposit of N350,000.
Recalling the collapse of her relationship, Sunday said her traditional introduction was held on March 23, 2019, less than a month before the accident.
She told The PUNCH that while her fiancé initially visited her in the hospital, he later stopped communicating and eventually informed her that he no longer wished to marry her.
The decision, she said, came while she was still receiving treatment, leaving her devastated at a time she expected emotional support the most.
She added that the experience taught her difficult lessons about relationships, as some friends also distanced themselves after the accident, including someone she considered her closest friend.
Sunday said she has since focused on rebuilding her life through hairstyling and perfume sales despite the physical challenges.
She lamented that she currently depends on crutches because the prosthetic limb she purchased became faulty.
According to her, the cost of a suitable prosthesis ranges from N850,000 to N2.5m, depending on its quality and functionality.
She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to assist her in acquiring a new prosthetic limb and providing financial support to expand her small business, which remains her major source of livelihood.
The accident survivor also alleged that the driver responsible for the crash neither visited her nor paid compensation.
She claimed that relatives of the driver only gave her family N50,000, explaining that they had already spent their resources burying the two other victims of the accident.
Despite losing a leg, her planned marriage and enduring years of hardship, Sunday said she remains optimistic that her life will improve with God's help and the support of compassionate Nigerians.
