The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has announced the recovery of N5.79bn linked to corrupt practices in the first six months of 2026, alongside securing 20 convictions as it stepped up efforts to combat graft across the country.

The figures were contained in the commission's mid-year performance report, which outlined its achievements between January and June.

According to the report, the anti-corruption agency recovered N5,789,681,925.02 during the period under review, describing the exercise as part of ongoing initiatives to protect public resources and reinforce transparency in government institutions.

The commission maintained that corruption remains a major obstacle to national security, noting that the diversion of funds meant for critical sectors continues to weaken public institutions and reduce public confidence in governance.

It stated that its interventions were designed to safeguard public assets, strengthen accountability systems and promote integrity in the management of government resources.

The report further revealed that the commission received 271 petitions during the six-month period, with 234 matters assigned for investigation.

It added that 25 criminal cases were instituted before different courts, resulting in 20 successful convictions.

As part of its preventive strategy, the ICPC disclosed that it carried out 33 system reviews and corruption risk assessments, in addition to conducting 42 corruption monitoring exercises across public institutions.

The commission also inaugurated 58 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units in ministries, departments and agencies to improve compliance with ethical standards and accountability.

To strengthen public awareness, the agency said it organised 291 enlightenment programmes and conferences, reaching 199,291 participants nationwide.

It also established 68 Anti-Corruption Clubs in schools as part of efforts to nurture a culture of integrity among young Nigerians.

The ICPC said the achievements reflected tangible progress in the country's anti-corruption campaign, adding that the recovery of public funds and sustained prosecution of offenders underscored its commitment to reducing impunity and promoting accountable governance.

It reaffirmed its resolve to sustain the fight against corruption, noting that strengthening integrity and public trust remains essential to Nigeria's development and security.
