A 400-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Isma’il Ishaq Magaji, has been killed by a stray bullet during a land dispute in his hometown.
Magaji, who was studying Public Administration, was reportedly caught in the violence that erupted over the disputed land in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The university disclosed the incident in a statement issued by its Deputy Registrar, Information, Baba Akote, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lapai on Saturday.
According to the statement, the student sustained the fatal gunshot injury while the dispute was ongoing in the community.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mohammed Sulaiman, described Magaji’s death as a painful loss to the institution and extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and associates.
Sulaiman prayed for the repose of Magaji’s soul and asked God to give his family the strength to cope with the loss.
The Vice-Chancellor also appealed to the communities involved in the dispute to embrace dialogue and restraint, warning against further violence and loss of lives.
As of the time of filing the report, the police had not officially confirmed the incident or provided details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
