Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed disappointment over the silence of some former associates, friends and family members as he faces ongoing political and legal challenges.
El-Rufai said he had supported several of them during difficult periods, sometimes at significant personal cost, but noted that some had now chosen to distance themselves from him.
The former governor stated this in a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” dated September 23, 2026, where he reflected on his relationships and the principles that had guided his decisions.
According to him, his willingness to support others was influenced by his Islamic faith, Arewa background, personal values and conscience rather than expectations of gratitude or reciprocal benefits.
He said he had stood by people and causes he believed in even when doing so came with personal consequences, stressing that those decisions were made voluntarily.
El-Rufai acknowledged that people who had benefited from his support were now entitled to decide how they would respond to his present circumstances.
He said some could choose to speak out, remain silent, deny their previous relationships or present the past differently.
The former governor added that the experiences of the past few months had made him reflect on some of his relationships and consider the expectations placed on people who look up to him.
