The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has rejected the reported plan by the Rainbow Coalition to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election while backing candidates of other political parties for legislative positions.
The ruling party described the arrangement as unacceptable, insisting that anyone supporting Tinubu should also work for the election of APC candidates contesting the senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly seats in the state.
The APC position was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by its State Secretary, Alex Kalejaye, who said the chapter was concerned about the coalition’s proposed approach to the 2027 elections.
Kalejaye said the party would mobilise support for Tinubu as well as its three senatorial, nine House of Representatives and 26 House of Assembly candidates, adding that the commitment was not negotiable.
The state secretary also said the APC had no agreement with members who had left the party to contest elections on other platforms, stressing that the focus of the chapter remained securing victory for its candidates.
He warned APC members against what the party described as anti-party activities, saying those found supporting rival candidates or maintaining political alliances that undermine the APC’s candidates would face sanctions.
The party further cautioned against “romancing” with opposition parties and candidates, arguing that such activities could undermine cohesion within its ranks ahead of the elections.
The Ondo APC urged its members to prioritise unity and collective mobilisation as it targets at least one million votes in the state.
It also warned that a situation where the Rainbow Coalition backs Tinubu for President but supports candidates on other platforms in legislative elections could create confusion among voters and complications during the electoral process.
