The Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has backed calls for a reduction in the price of petrol to N500 per litre, saying the measure would help cushion the effects of the economic hardship on Nigerians.
The union also unveiled its Ondo NUJ @50 anniversary logo as it commenced preparations for the 2026 Press Week and activities marking the council’s 50th anniversary.
These resolutions were reached at the monthly congress of the union held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre, Pen Crescent, Alagbaka, Akure, and presided over by the state chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite.
The congress aligned with the position of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Joint Negotiating Council that governments should adopt measures to bring down the cost of petrol to N500 per litre and increase the minimum wage to reflect prevailing economic realities.
It also called on the Ondo State Government to introduce compressed natural gas-powered mass transportation in Akure and other major towns to reduce transportation costs for residents, while commending the government for sustaining its free school shuttle scheme.
On the anniversary celebrations, the congress approved Sunday, November 22, to Sunday, November 29, 2026, for the weeklong Press Week activities, with the unveiling of the anniversary logo marking the commencement of preparations for the event.
The union further expressed concern over the indiscriminate location of shops along the perimeter fences and within the premises of public schools, urging the state government to check the practice and ban the sale of alcoholic and related substances around schools.
The congress also warned against harassment and intimidation of journalists as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify, pledging to defend its members against excesses by politicians and political appointees.
