Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, will graduate 836 students at its 16th convocation ceremony, with 98 undergraduates earning first-class degrees.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Omolola Irinoye, disclosed this on Friday during a briefing ahead of the ceremony scheduled for October 30 and 31, 2026. She said the graduating class comprised 786 undergraduates and 50 postgraduate students.
Irinoye defended the number of first-class graduates, attributing their performance to the university’s investment in academic quality and its commitment to ensuring that students receive grades they merit.
She explained that the institution required students to attain at least 70 per cent class attendance and complete continuous assessments before qualifying for examinations. The university’s quality assurance unit also monitors lecturers and students to ensure compliance with academic standards.
The vice-chancellor urged the Federal Government to extend the Nigerian Education Loan Fund scheme to private university students, arguing that attendance at privately owned institutions should not automatically exclude students from financial assistance.
She also appealed for a review of taxes imposed on private universities, noting that the financial burden affected institutions and parents. Irinoye said the university had introduced full-tuition scholarships for selected programmes and discounts of between 65 and 80 per cent, with at least 500 students benefiting since its establishment.
On infrastructure and medical training, she disclosed that the university’s annual admission quota for medicine had risen from 50 to 120 students, while its students recorded an 86 per cent pass rate in the Part I MBBS examination. She added that a 450-room medical hostel had been provided and that the institution had signed an agreement with PowerGen Renewable Energy to develop a solar farm to address its electricity challenges. The university had also approved the Federal Government’s new minimum wage for its workers.
The convocation lecture will be delivered by the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Dr Emomotimi Agama, on October 30.
Honorary doctorate degrees will be conferred on the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Kiladejo; Captain Edward Boyo; and Engineer Norbert C. Oleah, during the ceremony on October 31.
