Police arrest three secondary students during cult initiation

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three secondary school students during a suspected cult initiation in Owode-Yewa, recovering weapons and other items at the scene.

The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this to journalists on Friday, saying the suspects comprised a 12-year-old and two 18-year-olds.

He said the arrests followed intelligence received on Thursday, October 22, about a planned cult-related gathering tagged “Kito Day”, allegedly involving students from different secondary schools in the area.

According to him, the Divisional Police Officer in Owode-Yewa immediately deployed detectives, who worked alongside members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria to disrupt the activity.

The operation led to the arrest of the three students and the recovery of an English axe, two knives, a short cutlass, a toy gun made of rubber and a school bag.

Babaseyi said the prompt intervention of the security operatives prevented the suspected initiation from proceeding as planned.

He added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The police reiterated their commitment to tackling cultism and other criminal activities, urging residents to provide timely and credible information that could help prevent crime, particularly among young people.
