FRSC bars officers from escorting politicians ahead of 2027 polls

The Federal Road Safety Corps has directed its personnel to stay away from political convoy duties ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that patrol vehicles and sirens must not be used to serve politicians or private interests.

The directive was given by the RS6 Zonal Commanding Officer, ACM Abimbola Owolabi, during her first official visit to the Cross River State Command in Calabar on Wednesday.

Owolabi said officers deployed to campaign grounds should concentrate on managing traffic and preventing gridlock and road accidents.

She also prohibited the use of official vehicles for weddings, burial ceremonies and other engagements unrelated to the corps’ statutory responsibilities.

She urged personnel to step up road safety education, stressing that consistent public awareness efforts were necessary to reduce crashes and prevent avoidable deaths on Nigerian roads.

The zonal commander warned against bribery, extortion and other forms of indiscipline, noting that misconduct among officers could damage the reputation of the corps and weaken public trust.

She called for transparency and accountability in the discharge of official duties.

She also advised officers to exercise restraint during traffic enforcement, particularly when dealing with difficult motorists, to avoid confrontations that could result in physical injuries or damage to official uniforms.

Owolabi called for closer cooperation with private-sector operators to ensure that vehicles that break down on highways are removed promptly.

She further urged officers to strengthen rescue services, respond swiftly to emergencies and intensify patrols to improve road safety.

The FRSC commander encouraged personnel to maintain professionalism, handle official correspondence diligently and take advantage of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

She also appealed to members of the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association to support their spouses in carrying out their responsibilities and safeguarding road users.
