Gunmen kill two miners in fresh attack

Two miners have been killed after gunmen attacked a mining site in Kuru Jenta, Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:30pm on Friday while the victims and other miners were working at the site.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.

Tengwong described the incident as an unprovoked attack, expressing concern over the growing security threats facing mining communities in the state.

He said the latest killings occurred barely a week after two miners were reportedly killed at another mining location in Rakum village, Jos South Local Government Area.

The BYM spokesman called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, track down the attackers and ensure that those responsible were prosecuted.

He also advised miners and other residents to avoid carrying out mining activities at night, urging them to remain alert and adhere strictly to security guidelines.

Tengwong expressed concern that the latest attack occurred despite the curfew imposed by the Plateau State Government on three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi.

He urged residents to respect the curfew hours and avoid activities that could expose them to danger, particularly amid the prevailing security challenges in the affected communities.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of miners operating in parts of Plateau State, with calls for stronger security measures to protect workers and prevent further attacks.
