The Ondo State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has asserted that for any youth to have a breakthrough economically, such individual must enhance his or her academic certificates.
The State Coordinator made the assertion on Monday when she flagged off the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme for the 2021 Batch 'C' (Stream 1) orientation course.
Mrs. Ani said that the country does not need a prophet or soothsayer to inform the prospective corps members that the rate of unemployment in the country is alarming.
"Prospective corps members, the challenges we are facing as a nation are enormous and the way out is for the energetic, vibrant and ever resourceful youths to invest their time during the orientation exercise and in the course of the service year to building their capacity and acquiring skills".
"Not everyone will be fortunate enough to get paid employment which is extremely hard to get these days unless you have the right connections but you can become financially independent and create employment opportunities through skills and vocations readily available to you, courtesy of SAED".
The Coordinator disclosed that NYSC has made concrete and solid arrangements with credible, competent and highly professional Facilitators and Trainers to stay in camp throughout the ten days duration to impact practical knowledge of chosen skills and vocations into the prospective corps members.
"I want to tell you that the management has invited well grounded and experienced professionals in various fields to come and expose you to various practical skills and vocations which at the end of the day will assist you to make informed decision of what is good for you".
"I charge you to be focused, make necessary sacrifice, invest your time and deny yourself of the camp's little comforts so that you can become the personality of your dream in a foreseeable future" she concluded.
In her welcome address, the Assistant Director/Head, SAED, Mrs. Itohan Ehimwenma gave statistics of the unemployment rate which was put at 22% according to the release by the Bureau of Statistics of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
Mrs. Ehimwenma announced that various programmes to be sponsored by empowerment and development agencies and institutions were in place to assist the members of the service corps overcome the challenges of how to go about accessing funds and grants for their chosen skills and vocations.
'Mama SAED' as Mrs. Ehimwenma is fondly called advised the prospective corps members to put away all distractions and focus on the in-camp training and post-camp training when they get to their various places of primary assignment.
In his goodwill message, the SAED Monitoring Officer from NYSC Directorate Headquarters, Abuja, Mr. Timothy Bulus charged the prospective corps members to justify the investment of the NYSC in the SAED programme.
The representative of the New Horizon Systems Solutions Limited, an IT integrated firm, the sponsors of the event, Mr. Adeshina Oyerinde hinted that his organisation was in NYSC Ondo State camp to empower young professionals in various fields.
Highlight of the event was the experience sharing by serving and ex-corps members who encouraged the prospective corps members with the testimonies of their accomplishments since they keyed into SAED programme during their orientation exercise.
