Tragedy struck in Jos, Plateau State, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, when eight University of Jos (UNIJOS) students lost their lives after a trailer collided with a bus transporting them from a night outing.
Eyewitnesses said the bus driver also died at the scene, while two students were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The students were reportedly returning from their outing around 2 a.m. in two hired buses when, in the vicinity of Zaria Road Stadium, a trailer reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into one of the buses.
The collision caused the bus to swerve uncontrollably and smash into an electric pole just before Farin Gada bridge, according to bystanders.
A survivor recounted: “The collision tore the bus apart, killing eight occupants instantly before emergency responders later arrived to evacuate the bodies and rushed the two to a nearby hospital. …”
The Plateau State Police spokesman, DSP Alabo Alfred, could not immediately confirm the incident. A senior police officer, however, said authorities have launched a manhunt for the trailer driver, who allegedly fled the scene.
Residents and emergency responders described the crash as horrific, noting debris scattered across the road and calling for stronger safety measures on Zaria Road, a known high-risk area for accidents.
