The Ekiti State Government has taken disciplinary action against a surgeon and other hospital staff at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital over an alleged unlawful kidney removal.
The action followed the submission of findings by a seven-member panel constituted to investigate a complaint by Mr Joshua Afolayan concerning a surgical procedure performed on him at the facility.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, announced the decision in a statement released after the panel, chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, presented its report.
According to the statement, the surgeon who led the operation has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect, while other members of the surgical team present during the procedure have been placed on a one-month suspension, pending further administrative action.
The government also approved the payment for a fresh kidney transplant for Afolayan and undertook to cover his post-transplant treatment and related medical care for a period of two years.
In addition, authorities ordered a restructuring of relevant departments within EKSUTH to improve clinical oversight, accountability and patient safety.
The state government said it would enforce strict sanctions where professional conduct falls short, while assuring residents of continued reforms to strengthen healthcare delivery and rebuild trust in the system.
