An Upper Area Court sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has dissolved the marriage between Aisha Salisu and her husband, Abubakar Isah, following his prolonged absence and alleged neglect.
The court terminated the union in line with Islamic law after Salisu filed a suit citing abandonment, lack of care, and loss of affection.
Testifying before the court, Salisu said her husband, whom she married under Sharia, had been away for six years without fulfilling his marital obligations.
She told the court that both parties resided in Anguwan Hashimu, within the court’s jurisdiction, but lamented that Isah failed to provide for her basic needs, including feeding, healthcare, and clothing.
The petitioner urged the court to dissolve the marriage on grounds of neglect and absence, stating that the relationship had broken down irretrievably.
Responding, Isah did not contest the claims. He explained that he had left home in search of better financial opportunities but consented to the dissolution of the marriage.
He subsequently pronounced divorce in accordance with Islamic law and asked the court to grant his wife’s request.
Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Adamu Haruna, upheld the application and ordered that the marriage be dissolved.
The court further directed Salisu to observe a three-month waiting period before remarrying, in line with Islamic provisions.
