Vigilante who fled after shooting woman found dead inside bush

A suspected killer who fled after allegedly murdering a woman in Abia State has been found dead in a bush, days after security operatives launched a manhunt for him.

The suspect, identified as Chinedu Anamelechi, was discovered lifeless in Amakama community, Umuahia South Local Government Area, according to residents.

Anamelechi, a local vigilante operative, had reportedly gone into hiding after allegedly shooting a woman, Ezinne Ariwodo, last week.

Sources said the incident also left two others injured, including a youth who reportedly attempted to intervene and another woman who was stabbed during the attack.

Following the incident, youths in the community, alongside the police, had commenced efforts to track down the suspect before his body was found.

While security agencies are yet to officially confirm the cause of his death, residents alleged that the suspect may have taken his own life to evade arrest.

A community source said the suspect was aware of the gravity of his actions and may have acted out of fear of possible consequences.

The Abia State Police Command had earlier confirmed the recovery of the deceased woman’s body and the rescue of the injured victims, but has yet to react to the latest development.
