The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ondo State Council, Leke Adegbite, has been honoured with a Leadership Award by the Social Sciences Students’ Association of Adekunle Ajasin University for his contributions to journalism and media leadership in the state.
Adegbite received the award during a public lecture and leadership award ceremony organised by the students’ association at the Nelson Mandela Hall of the institution on Thursday.
The recognition, according to the organisers, was in appreciation of his leadership role in the media industry and his contributions to the growth of journalism practice in Ondo State.
The event, themed, “Nigerian Security Challenge and Its Politics of Blame Game,” attracted academics, traditional rulers and other stakeholders from different sectors.
Represented at the event by journalist, Adeboye Ado, the NUJ chairman urged students to remain focused on their academic pursuits and embrace hard work as a foundation for future success.
He expressed appreciation to the students for the honour bestowed on him and commended the institution for producing graduates making impacts in various professions across the world.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Adebisi Daramola, described the lecture topic as timely in view of the country’s current security realities.
“The choice of the topic is timely and courageous. The competence of the guest lecturer is not in doubt. I commend the association for organising this lecture because it contributes meaningfully to national development,” he said.
Also speaking, the Owa-Ale of Ikare-Akoko, Adeleke Adegbite-Adedoyin, praised the President of the Social Sciences Students’ Association, Mogaji Oluwatosin, for his leadership qualities and commitment to students’ development.
The monarch encouraged students to remain optimistic about the future while embracing entrepreneurship and job creation opportunities.
In her remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Adesuyi Adebukola, stressed the need for collective efforts in addressing insecurity in the country, describing the challenge as a global concern.
She referenced the recent abduction of school pupils in Oyo State and called for practical solutions to the nation’s security crisis rather than persistent blame among political leaders and stakeholders.
“Without security, meaningful development cannot be achieved. It is time for all stakeholders to work together towards finding lasting solutions to the challenges confronting the country,” she said.
Delivering the keynote lecture, the Vice-Chancellor of Achievers University, Oyesoji Aremu, said insecurity continued to have adverse effects on Nigeria’s economy and education sector.
According to him, security concerns had prevented him from honouring several academic engagements in different parts of the country.
He called for improved regional collaboration and greater support for security agencies in tackling insecurity nationwide.
