The family of Abdullahi Bello has appealed to the Plateau State Police Command to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of their son, who was allegedly lynched after being wrongly identified as a Fulani man in Jos South Local Government Area.
Speaking on the incident, the deceased's sister, Hannatu Bello, said Abdullahi left home on Sunday and did not return, leaving the family worried before they were later contacted by the police.
She explained that officers informed them that the victim had been rescued unconscious following an attack by a mob in the Rantiya area and was receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Dadin Kowa.
According to her, she and their mother rushed to the hospital, where they found him in a critical condition.
Despite efforts to save his life, he later died from the injuries he sustained.
Hannatu said the investigating police officer told the family that security operatives on patrol received information from local vigilantes in the early hours of Monday about a man who had been assaulted after he was allegedly mistaken for a Fulani herder.
She maintained that her brother was not Fulani, alleging that he suffered multiple machete wounds and other severe injuries during the attack.
She described the incident as cruel and called on the authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The family also appealed to investigators to examine the deceased's mobile phone, which is in police custody, expressing optimism that his call history could provide useful clues to aid the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, said he had only come across reports of the incident on social media and would verify the claims.
The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alabo Alfred, could not be reached for comment as calls and a WhatsApp message sent to him were not answered before press time.
