The Ondo State Government has expressed concern over the recent operations conducted by officers of the Force Intelligence Department across parts of the state, saying the manner in which the exercises were carried out has heightened anxiety among residents.
The government said while it recognises the constitutional mandate of security agencies to investigate criminal activities and maintain law and order, such operations should be executed in line with established procedures and with adequate regard for public safety.
According to the government, the operations, described as commando-style raids, have unsettled many residents and disrupted the peaceful atmosphere for which the state is known.
The position of the government was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku.
The state government called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to take steps to ensure that specialised police units operating within the state adhere strictly to laid-down operational guidelines.
It stressed that where credible intelligence exists, security agencies should utilise appropriate communication and coordination channels with relevant state authorities to avoid creating unnecessary tension among citizens.
The government maintained that it remained committed to supporting legitimate security operations aimed at protecting lives and combating criminality.
However, it insisted that such operations must be conducted professionally and responsibly in a manner that promotes public trust and confidence rather than fear.
The statement further assured residents of the administration's commitment to their safety and welfare, urging them to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.
It added that the government would continue to engage relevant security authorities to ensure that future operations within the state are carried out in accordance with due process and with respect for public peace.
