A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce suit filed by a man, Sylvester, against his wife, Kudirat, over allegations of physical assault, persistent quarrels and threats to his life.
The plaintiff told the court that his marriage had been characterised by frequent conflicts and hostility, adding that his wife had denied him peace of mind throughout their relationship.
According to him, Kudirat was often confrontational and regularly engaged him in arguments that sometimes resulted in physical attacks.
Sylvester further alleged that his wife habitually kept grudges and once refused to speak to him for three months.
He also claimed that she stopped preparing meals for him and neglected his welfare despite continuing to cater for herself.
The petitioner told the court that the situation had deteriorated to the point where his wife allegedly threatened to kill him, forcing him to seek legal intervention.
He therefore urged the court to dissolve the union, saying he could no longer live with her.
“My wife and I did not celebrate our marriage formally, and I never paid her bride price,” he told the court.
“She started making life difficult for me from the onset of our relationship. She never appreciated my efforts and was always looking for reasons to quarrel.
“She is aggressive and becomes violent whenever we disagree. On several occasions, she beat me seriously and embarrassed me in the presence of our children and neighbours.
“At a point, she refused to speak to me for three months. Although she cooked for herself, she stopped cooking for me and paid no attention to my welfare.
“She now threatens to kill me. I fear for my safety and want this marriage dissolved before anything happens to me,” he added.
Kudirat was absent from the court proceedings despite reportedly being served with a hearing notice.
Following the testimony, the President of the court, Mrs O. E. Owoseni, adjourned the case to a later date for the defendant to present her defence.
The court also directed that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on Kudirat before the next sitting.
