A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Chairman of Eagle FM, Asiwaju Kunle Kalejaye, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a national emergency on terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, warning that the worsening security situation poses a serious threat to the country's stability.
Kalejaye made the call in his Democracy Day message, where he expressed concern over the persistent wave of attacks across different parts of the country.
The legal practitioner described the growing insecurity as a national embarrassment, saying it requires urgent and decisive intervention by the Federal Government.
According to him, the activities of terrorists, kidnappers and bandits are gradually eroding public confidence in Nigeria's security institutions and casting doubt on the effectiveness of efforts to safeguard lives and property.
He noted that criminal groups have become increasingly audacious, extending their operations beyond rural communities into major towns and urban centres.
Kalejaye also raised concerns over reports of criminals disguising themselves in military uniforms while carrying out attacks, saying such incidents further weaken public trust in the nation's security architecture.
"The Federal Government must take stronger and more decisive steps to address the security crisis before it causes irreparable damage to the country's security framework," he said.
The Senior Advocate maintained that while security agencies have continued to confront criminal elements, a national emergency declaration would demonstrate the government's determination to mobilise all available resources toward ending terrorism and related crimes.
He argued that such a move would send a clear message that Nigeria remains committed to defeating insecurity and restoring peace across the country.
Kalejaye further urged the Federal Government to develop comprehensive strategies aimed at dismantling criminal networks, strengthening intelligence gathering and rebuilding public confidence in security institutions.
He stressed that protecting citizens remains one of the core responsibilities of government, adding that threats to national security must be tackled proactively before they escalate beyond control.
The legal luminary lamented that the continued celebration of democratic milestones amid widespread insecurity undermines the gains of democracy and projects a negative image of the country internationally.
"It is left to President Tinubu to save our nation at this perilous time," he said.
Kalejaye therefore appealed to the President to immediately declare a national emergency on terrorism, banditry and kidnapping as part of efforts to restore security and protect Nigerians.
