Atiku speaks on contesting 2031 Presidency

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt to become Nigeria’s President.

Atiku made the declaration during a Hausa interview on Wednesday, ruling out any possibility of returning to the presidential race in 2031 if he fails to win the forthcoming election.

The former Vice President was asked whether he would consider another presidential bid after 2027. He responded that he had already made up his mind not to contest again.

“No, I have said it before. Right from this election, I will not contest again,” Atiku said.

He also called on Nigerians who have registered and obtained their Permanent Voter Cards to participate fully in the 2027 poll, stressing that voters must do more than simply cast their ballots.

According to him, voters should remain at their polling stations after voting to observe the counting process and ensure their votes are accurately recorded.

“After going out to vote, they should also stay, escort and ensure that those votes are counted,” he said.

Responding to questions about his capacity to govern amid concerns over his age and health, Atiku maintained that he was fit to serve if elected.

The ADC candidate said there was no medical basis for claims that he was incapable of leading the country, insisting that he remained in good health.

“No doctor has declared that I am unfit in terms of health. I know my body, I know I am healthy, and I do not have a single defect,” he stated.

The ADC Vanguard subsequently described the declaration as an important development in Atiku’s long political career, saying the 2027 election could mark the final opportunity for Nigerians to decide whether he should lead the country.
