An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Yola, Adamawa State, for allegedly attacking a serving judge with a cutlass and seriously injuring him.
Garba, a resident of Korawa village in Fufore Local Government Area, reportedly attacked the presiding judge of the Mayo-Inne Area Court, Dauda Hamman, during court proceedings.
The incident occurred on Monday, August 31, 2026, while the judge was handling a case involving Garba and another man, identified as Ismail Yusuf. The suspect was subsequently arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola for further investigation.
The Adamawa State Police Command said the elderly suspect allegedly used a cutlass to repeatedly strike the judge’s hand, leaving him with severe injuries.
Following the completion of the investigation, Garba was brought before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola, on Monday, September 7, where he faced a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Nguroje said the case was initially handled at the Fufore Divisional Police Headquarters before being transferred to the State CID on September 4 for further investigation and prosecution.
He said, “The suspect attacked the presiding judge with a cutlass and severally cut his hand, causing him grievous injuries.”
According to the police spokesman, the charge was read and interpreted to Garba in court, after which he pleaded guilty and attributed his action to the devil.
The prosecution alleged that the offence contravened Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.
The court subsequently ordered that Garba be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further proceedings in the case.
Nguroje added that ASP Zakka Musa was handling the prosecution on behalf of the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan.
