A former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, Wale Adedayo, has predicted the defeat of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 governorship election, saying the Peoples Democratic Party is poised to take over the state.
Adedayo, who served as a council chairman under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s APC administration, said the PDP candidate, Ladi Adebutu, would defeat the APC flag bearer, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.
The former council boss made the prediction on Monday while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
According to him, the APC has allegedly lost its popularity across the state’s 20 local government areas and 236 wards, creating what he described as a major shift in political support towards the PDP.
Adedayo said the 2027 election would produce what he termed “seismic changes” in Ogun politics, insisting that the outcome could surprise many observers.
He said, “The way things are going now, APC is gone in Ogun State. PDP is going to be there in 2027 for a number of reasons.”
The political analyst, however, distinguished between the presidential election and the state-level contests, saying President Bola Tinubu could retain strong support in Ogun while the PDP would dominate the governorship, National Assembly and House of Assembly elections.
Adedayo also questioned Adeola’s claim to Ogun indigene status, alleging that the APC candidate had no ancestral roots in the state and should publicly establish his claim.
He argued that the issue of ancestry would become an important factor in the governorship contest, adding that political positions should not be used to validate disputed claims of indigene status.
On zoning, the former council chairman said the Ijebus had previously supported Yewa candidates and argued that the current political situation provided an opportunity for Adebutu to emerge as governor.
“We don't have any problem with zoning. That is why in 2011, 2015 and on the line like that, we gave them (Yewa) our support,” he said.
Adedayo urged voters to examine the backgrounds and records of all the candidates before casting their ballots, stressing that informed choices remained essential to democracy.
He further claimed that the PDP had gained considerable ground since the last election, insisting that the political equation in Ogun had changed significantly.
“We know what happened during the last election. In Dapo Abiodun's polling unit, ward, local government and senatorial district, he was defeated there,” Adedayo said.
