The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof. Tomola Obamuyi, has commended the Ondo State Governor and Visitor to the institution, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for his intervention in resolving the financial and labour challenges confronting the university.
Obamuyi said the governor’s intervention had enabled the university community to return to normal academic and administrative activities following the suspension of the industrial action by the unions.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor recalled that the state government provided over N1bn as a special bailout to clear salary arrears and also released funds to support the implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and university unions.
He expressed satisfaction with the return of students and staff to campus, describing the development as an opportunity for the university to refocus on its core responsibilities.
The VC said Aiyedatiwa’s response to the demands of the unions demonstrated the importance his administration attached to education and human capital development.
According to him, the intervention would contribute to securing a better future for youths in Ondo State and generations yet unborn.
Obamuyi pledged that with the labour crisis resolved, the university would concentrate on manpower development, research and the production of graduates capable of competing globally.
Meanwhile, students have begun returning to classrooms, while academic and non-teaching staff have resumed their duties. A circular signed by the Registrar, Dr Olubunmi Babalola, also announced that the second semester examinations would commence on October 19.
