The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday, warning residents to prepare for possible strong winds accompanying the storms.
The agency, in its weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, said parts of the North-East and North-Central regions would experience thunderstorms and varying levels of rainfall during the three-day period.
On Monday morning, thunderstorms with light rain are expected in parts of Taraba and Kebbi, while scattered thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are likely across parts of the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi later in the day.
NiMet also predicted thunderstorms over parts of Niger State in the morning, with moderate rainfall expected across most of the North-Central region by afternoon or evening. In the South, cloudy conditions are expected, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain in parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.
For Tuesday, the agency forecast thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Taraba in the morning, followed by moderate rainfall across much of the northern region later in the day.
It also predicted thunderstorms with moderate rain over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau states, while parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and the South-South region could experience thunderstorms and light rain.
On Wednesday, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected over parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states, with similar conditions forecast across most parts of the North later in the day and much of the South.
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected areas and urged residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees to prevent injuries from falling branches. It also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for operational planning.
