The Ondo State Government has intercepted a vehicle conveying a suspected hazardous substance with a strong offensive odour and handed the driver over to the police for investigation.
The vehicle was stopped on Sunday, September 13, 2026, after the government received intelligence from a concerned resident about its movement.
The Ministry of Environment disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, explaining that officials discreetly monitored the vehicle before intercepting it.
The driver, identified as Olorunwa Sunday from Delta State and resident in Oke-Aro, reportedly told officials that he was engaged by a resident to dispose of the substance at any location he considered suitable.
Following the interception, the driver was handed over to the police for questioning and further investigation into the origin and intended disposal of the substance.
The ministry said the material would be subjected to laboratory and chemical analyses to establish its composition and determine the possible danger it poses to the environment and public health.
It added that appropriate legal measures would be taken under the state’s environmental laws based on the outcome of the laboratory examination and other findings from the investigation.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the health, safety and wellbeing of residents and preventing the improper handling or disposal of potentially dangerous substances.
Kindly investigate appropriate and allow judgement to take it's cause. We deserve healthy life in Ondo State.
