A traditional burial ceremony in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, has ended in tragedy after a High Chief was allegedly killed by an accidental gunshot.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during funeral rites for another traditional chief in the community, when a firearm was reportedly discharged amid the traditional activities.
The bullet struck the High Chief in the head, reportedly killing him instantly and throwing mourners into confusion.
Although details surrounding the shooting remained unclear as of press time, preliminary accounts suggested that firearms were being discharged into the air as part of the traditional rites when the fatal shot occurred.
The identities of the deceased High Chief and the traditional ruler being buried had yet to be officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The incident, which was captured in a video from the ceremony, has since generated tension in the community as residents sought answers over how the firearm was discharged.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Jimoh added that the police had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, assuring that further details would be made available as the investigation progresses.
