The National Youth Service Corps members have been urged to make effective service, volunteerism and responsible citizenship part of their conduct as they begin their national service.
The Assistant Director of SERVICOM, NYSC Oyo State, Mrs Oyeniran Oluronke, gave the charge while addressing members of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I during a SERVICOM lecture at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin, Oyo State.
Oyeniran explained that the Service Compact with All Nigerians was designed to improve the quality of public service and promote a culture of accountability, efficiency and responsiveness among service providers.
She, however, noted that the principles of SERVICOM should not be restricted to government offices, stressing that corps members could also promote the values through their conduct and contributions to their host communities.
The SERVICOM official encouraged the corps members to take an active part in camp activities and willingly accept responsibilities that could contribute to the smooth running of the orientation programme.
She said volunteering for such assignments would expose the corps members to practical experiences in leadership, teamwork and community service, while also helping them develop qualities that could benefit their future careers.
Oyeniran further urged them to carry the lessons beyond the orientation camp by using their Community Development Service activities to promote responsible behaviour, civic consciousness and effective service delivery among pupils and residents of their host communities.
She said the corps members, as important members of their host communities, had an opportunity through their service year to make meaningful contributions to society and inspire others to embrace responsible citizenship.
