Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has alleged that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Minna, Niger State, to discuss a possible vice-presidential slot on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
Fayose made the claim in a statement released on Wednesday via his verified X handle, where he gave what he described as inside details of the meeting.
According to him, Makinde travelled to Minna on Tuesday for talks with Atiku, adding that the choice of venue and participants was carefully arranged to secure broader political confidence.
Fayose alleged that the meeting centred on permutations ahead of the next presidential election, particularly the selection of a running mate.
He claimed that Atiku’s camp was of the view that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would neither accept to serve as deputy nor be widely embraced in the North as a potential successor.
The former governor further alleged that Atiku was confident of clinching the ADC presidential ticket, following moves to ensure that the party’s ticket would not be zoned to any region.
He claimed that Makinde agreed in principle to join the ADC on the understanding that he would be picked as Atiku’s running mate if the former vice president secures the party’s ticket.
Fayose also alleged that Makinde pledged to mobilise support for the ADC, particularly from the South-West, and leverage political connections in the South-South ahead of the party’s primary.
He added that a follow-up meeting between both camps was being planned outside the country, while noting that neither Atiku nor Makinde had publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
