A resident identified as Sani Abdullahi has reportedly lost his life following a violent disturbance at the venue of the All Progressives Congress House of Representatives primary election in Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Kasuwan Ali community, Mangu Local Government Area, after tensions escalated over delays in the conduct of the primary election.
Residents said confusion began when party members and supporters protested the absence of electoral officials expected to supervise the exercise, which had initially been scheduled for Saturday morning.
A resident of the community, Ibrahim Sale, said the prolonged delay triggered suspicion among some youths, who alleged that attempts were being made to frustrate the process.
He explained that government officials who arrived at the venue later attempted to leave after waiting for hours without the arrival of returning officers.
According to him, some aggrieved youths blocked the road and insisted that nobody would leave the venue until electoral officials arrived to conduct the primary election.
Sale added that security operatives later moved in to disperse the crowd after the protest intensified.
He alleged that some protesters threw stones at the security personnel, prompting soldiers at the scene to respond with gunfire.
During the confusion, Abdullahi was reportedly struck by a stray bullet, leading to his death.
The development caused panic in the area as party supporters and residents fled the scene for safety.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities and officials of the All Progressives Congress had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
