Suspected bandits have attacked the residence of the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, killing a security guard and abducting several residents during a predawn raid on the community.
The attackers were said to have invaded Kaura Namoda at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday, targeting different parts of the town after first storming the rector's residence.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the rector, Dr Aminu Yusuf, narrowly escaped alongside his wife and daughter by climbing over the perimeter fence of their home.
According to the source, the rector used a ladder to help his wife and daughter out before escaping himself, but reportedly sustained a leg injury in the process.
The assailants were said to have shot dead the rector's security guard, identified as Isah Yankaba, during the attack.
"I attended his funeral prayer in his hometown, Yankaba, where he was buried according to Islamic rites," the source said.
The gunmen reportedly proceeded to Hayin Baguso, a community near the Low-Cost Housing Estate, where they abducted the wife and daughter of a resident identified simply as Ibrahim.
They also attempted to attack the residence of a petroleum dealer, Salisu Azaria, but fled after security operatives responded to distress calls from the area.
The attackers later moved to the Low-Cost area of the town, where they reportedly abducted a university lecturer, Dr Namadina Hamza.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Zamfara State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, neither answered telephone calls nor responded to text messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.
