Former Osun State Governor, Bisi Akande, and his former deputy, Iyiola Omisore, were among APC chieftains who met in Ila-Orangun to assess the party’s preparations for Saturday’s governorship election.
The meeting, held at Akande’s country residence, was convened by the Osun APC Elders’ Caucus, with party leaders reviewing the campaign so far and considering measures to improve the party’s prospects at the poll.
A photograph of Akande and Omisore walking together after the meeting attracted attention on Sunday, prompting speculation about a possible private discussion between the two former political allies.
However, a member of Omisore’s campaign team, Ajibola Famurewa, who attended the meeting, said the photograph was taken after the caucus meeting as Akande and Omisore proceeded for lunch.
Famurewa explained that Akande later accompanied Omisore to his vehicle after lunch, adding that their discussion centred on strategies for securing victory for the APC at the election.
He said the elders had critically examined the party’s campaign, identified areas requiring attention and exchanged ideas on how to address the challenges.
According to him, Omisore also contributed suggestions during the deliberations, after which the participants reached what he described as a practical position on the way forward.
The meeting comes ahead of the August 15 governorship election, in which 14 political parties are expected to participate.
The incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, is seeking another term on the platform of the Accord Party, while the APC is among the parties challenging the ruling party in the keenly contested election.
