The Osun State Police Command has released the state Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, after keeping him in custody for about 24 hours over Saturday’s shooting incident in Ilesa.
Adejoorin was picked up by police operatives on Saturday after three people were reportedly injured when gunshots disrupted an All Progressives Congress rally in the Isokun area of Ilesa.
The commissioner was said to have been travelling through the town when officers intercepted his vehicle and took him to the command headquarters in Osogbo for questioning.
The police spokesman in the state, Abiodun Ojelabi, who confirmed Adejoorin’s release on Sunday, said the commissioner was freed after investigators questioned him over his alleged connection with the incident.
Ojelabi said, “The commissioner has been released. He was released today but the Amotekun that was arrested with him, I can’t confirm his release yet because I am still gathering my facts.”
According to the police, three persons sustained gunshot injuries during the disturbance, while four spent cartridges were recovered from the scene. A pump-action rifle was also reportedly seized from an Amotekun operative arrested in connection with the incident.
The command had earlier said its Intelligence Response Team intercepted a white Lexus 350 while responding to the shooting. An Amotekun operative and another occupant identified as Adejoorin were subsequently taken to the command for questioning.
The incident has triggered accusations between the APC and Accord Party, with both sides offering conflicting accounts of what happened during the rally.
The Head of the APC Campaign Council in Ilesa West, Folarin Fafowora, alleged that gunmen linked to an official convoy opened fire as the party’s rally was winding down.
However, the Imole Campaign Council spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, accused APC members of firing weapons and attacking Accord Party supporters and property during the incident.
The police said investigations into the shooting are continuing, while it remained unclear whether the Amotekun operative arrested alongside the commissioner had also been released.
