A young man identified as Azeez has reportedly died after he was allegedly assaulted by suspected cult members following a dispute over a missing mobile phone in the Oko-Oba area of Agege, Lagos State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, August 3, followed an argument involving Azeez and some associates after they attended a social gathering.
A police source, who confirmed the development to PUNCH Metro on Sunday, said the victim sustained injuries during the attack and later died.
The source said the dispute started when a phone was reported missing after the party, adding that the disagreement subsequently turned violent.
“We got a report that he passed away as a result of an assault on him by some suspected cultists said to be his friends. The argument was as a result of a missing phone,” the source said.
Further details emerged from Naija Confra, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, which claimed that the incident began during a birthday celebration on Sunday night, August 2.
According to the platform, a fight reportedly broke out at the gathering and a man identified as Abela allegedly picked up a phone and handed it to Azeez.
The platform alleged that the situation escalated after the owner discovered that the phone was missing and subsequently found it with Azeez.
It claimed that Azeez told those confronting him that Abela had given him the device to keep, but Abela allegedly denied doing so.
Naija Confra further alleged that Azeez was attacked by the phone owner and his associates before they left the venue.
The platform said the matter later took another turn when Azeez confronted Abela over the alleged denial, leading to another confrontation.
It was further alleged that suspected members of the Neo-Black Movement subsequently took Azeez to another location, where he was allegedly assaulted.
Azeez reportedly succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the alleged attacks.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful as calls to her telephone lines were unanswered.
A message sent to the police spokesperson had also not received a response as of press time.
