Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, have commended the institution’s Students’ Union Government President, Folagbade Greatness Ayoola, for leading efforts to draw attention to the prolonged industrial action that disrupted academic activities.
The students said the SUG president’s involvement in the agitation gave expression to their concerns over the prolonged closure of the university and the effect of the crisis on their academic programmes, welfare and personal plans.
The commendation followed the union’s activities during the strike, particularly the September 3 protest, when students blocked the university’s main entrance and adjoining roads to demand an urgent resolution of the issues responsible for the disruption.
During the protest, Ayoola spoke to journalists about the difficulties confronting students, calling on the relevant authorities to intervene and ensure the university resumed academic activities.
The Students’ Union subsequently issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government, urging it to act on the situation and warning that the protest could be taken to Alagbaka, Akure, if no concrete intervention was made.
Speaking on the SUG president’s role, the immediate past Public Relations Officer of the AAUA Students’ Union, Ajidagba Mosadoluwa Akinbobola, popularly known as Mosa Gold, praised Ayoola for standing with students during the prolonged crisis.
A student of the Faculty of Science, identified as Tobi, also acknowledged the SUG president’s efforts, saying his public advocacy helped keep students’ concerns in focus during the period of uncertainty.
Similarly, Olawale, a student of the Department of Mass Communication, commended Ayoola’s contribution to the agitation, noting that the union’s involvement was important in pressing for an end to the disruption.
With the industrial crisis appearing to be nearing resolution, students are now anticipating the restoration of normal academic activities and a return to the classroom after weeks of uncertainty.
The development has also renewed expectations that the Students’ Union will sustain its engagement with the authorities and continue to represent students’ interests on issues affecting their education and welfare.
