Presidential Election 2027: Atiku's sneeze, Tinubu's cold by Alaba Yusuf

"When France sneezes, Europe catches a cold." — Klemens Von Metternich, German-born Austrian statesman and diplomat (1809–1848)

The Conservative Chancellor of the old Austrian Empire had safely postulated that:

"Because France was a cultural and political powerhouse in the 19th century, its revolutionary ideas of liberty, nationalism, and democracy acted like a contagious germ that "infected" the rest of the continent."

Metternich also meant that "any political upheaval, revolution, or social unrest in France quickly spread and caused similar rebellions across other European nations."

Taken together, contextually and literally, Metternich's metaphor might be for today's Nigerian political actors and spectators alike.

Hence, the consistent persistence of Atiku Abubakar's planned architecture to unseat incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Aso Villa in Abuja, through cutting-edge, issue-oriented policies and debates — The Atiku Economic Recovery Plan (AERP) — is increasing the temperature in the political room. Atiku's redefined subsidy sneeze and other policy plans on unity, security, power devolution and restructuring, accountable economic recalibration, education scholarships, public health promotion, energy generation, job creation and social amenities provision; are fast giving the incumbent APC administration a cold, nagging headache and a real cause for concern.

Usually, Nigeria is a country that waits. People wait for power to return. And wait for answers from those in the corridors of power. But the political pendulum is swinging swiftly towards the point of reforms. Ditto AERP.

There seems to be a paradigm shift towards 2027. It is real. And a deal that has to be sealed. Not easily, though. Something is shifting. Atiku is now the refreshed warhorse on Nigeria's political racing track. For the first time in years, the country is not waiting for reaction anymore. Citizens are watching for direction — the Atiku option!

That direction is coming from H.E. Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress.

Reason why a new lexicon has entered our political vocabulary: "Atiku's sneeze, Tinubu's cold."

Curiously, it sounds like a mere banter. But, on a closer examination, it is a fundamental political possibility.

When Atiku speaks on the economy, within hours, the government releases a counter-statement.

When Atiku proposes solutions to insecurity, subsidy, economy, students' loan, social security, energy cost and governance issues, suddenly, all become rebuttal press headlines — even in the weekly Federal Economic Council's, FEC, meetings.

Indeed, whenever Atiku motivates the youth to sell ideas and innovations rather than their kidneys, or young ladies not to sell their precious, newly born babies, or preaches emancipation to the poor masses in the country, the next government action would be scheduled town hall meetings or humongous $billions pledged for temporary palliative for the 63% IMF-certified multidimensional poor in Nigeria. What else, if not a case of "Atiku's sneeze and Tinubu's cold?"

This cannot be a sheer coincidence. No. It is a true game of agenda-setting. Leadership is not about who shouts loudest. It is about who sets the terms of debate. Going by current metrics, Atiku reigns the media and political market share like an albatross in the sky. The Presidential polls of January 16 is just a couple of months away. Enough headache time for PBAT's camp. Little wonder, they are resorting to Hitler-hoodism propaganda and AI-generated FAKE newspaper and social media messaging to hoodwink or deceive innocent youths and unsuspecting first-time voters.

Just imagine the ruthless cruelty of the Federal Capital Territory Minister who said publicly that: "Nigerians will vote Tinubu for a second term, despite the hunger in the land." What an arrant nonsense and absence of empathy or compassion from a supposed leader?

For too long, Nigerians have been forced to react to crisis. The ADC under Atiku is offering something different: a plan for a better tomorrow. A reasonable choice. And a chance to enhance and advance the good cause of prosperity and development for Nigerians and Nigeria.

Atiku, the job creator, has a proper plan for jobs for the country's teeming youth population. He has a plan to unify the country and explore her plurality via restructuring and devolution of power, state police and equitable distribution of wealth without waste. Atiku plans to restore Nigeria's dignity and credibility at home and abroad.

And because there is a plan, the government is forced to respond. That is what leadership looks like. Atiku's sneeze, Tinubu's cold, means this: When the opposition leader speaks, the nation listens. And when the nation listens, the government must answer. Simplicita!

Therefore, the 2027 presidential elections will not be won by hurling an avalanche of insults on the former Vice President and Waziri of Adamawa. It will certainly be decided by the balance of ideas in a free, fair and credible balloting. Tested and trusted, people-driven manifesto will play pivotal roles. Citizens will have to vote with their heads, not their stomachs. Hunger, anger, insecurity, mass unemployment, frustration and national depression should be on the front burner. This is a task that must be done.

The next presidential polls will be won by the candidate who shows Nigerians a clear path out of hardship and into prosperity. Atiku is that pathfinder and torchbearer. Let's follow "who knows the road."

The ADC is the political conveyor belt, the path. And their presidential candidate, H.E. Atiku Abubakar, is articulating it. Good news is that Nigeria is listening to this agelong defender of democracy.

The palpable cold is proof that someone is setting the temperature in the political room. That man is Atiku, the entrepreneurial industrialist, education investor, youth mentor and consummate humanist.

Meanwhile, the question for 2027 is simple: Do we want four more years of reaction under APC administration, or do we want leadership that sets the agenda? Nigerians should vote wisely and rightly. Mandate should not be sold for a pack of noodles or bread or freebies. Atiku is a workman who has paid enough political dues to qualify him for the saddle of a steadfast statesman, compassionate public steward and selfless headman of our country.

Thus, Atiku's sneeze should not just give President Tinubu an obvious cold, but also jolt the rest of our nationals into positive action of voting our conscience and generational future at the next election. After all, poverty has no boundaries, no tribe, region or religion. Let's speak with our PVC. Vote and ensure that your vote counts. The beauty of democracy is in people's participation. Do your bit.

Atiku is sneezing, and Tinubu is catching the cold in Europe as a holidaymaker.
